Conclusion

As has been the case for many citizens held captive in filtration camps, members of the LGBTQ+ community have experienced the negative consequences of societal and governmental shifts.  They have also witnessed the major health crisis in Russia during the early 21st century HIV and AIDS epidemic. Consequently, millions of innocent people are faced with the effects of a lifelong disease, which most Russian leaders choose to ignore, rather than address.  This lack of public awareness is the root cause of the massive spread of disease. Unwilling to address major issues, Russian leaders in power are left with a country riddled with violence, death, and discrimination. The steps made to solve health and societal issues in Russia are minimal, and the multiple shifts in governmental structure has compounded the lethargy.

Furthermore, the filtration camps implemented during the war with Chechnya have plagued Russia. The torture techniques used by Russian soldiers on their victims, are clearly intended to inflict pain and damage on those who do not fit the ideal of a model citizen, while remaining a secret invisible to outsiders (ie- techniques intended to not leave bruises or evidence of abuse). Without leaving marks, torture victims in the filtrations camps would not have any physical evidence to testify in court. For the most part, the people who are suffering in filtration camps, will only have their word to explain what happened to them, and the people who pass away in the camps will never get to tell their stories.

Overall, Russia’s complicated politics and society have become an ongoing tale that outsiders continue to observe.  The transition from communism to a federal republic has not left Russia without the consequences of economic hardship and health crises. Clearly, in order to find a path forward, it is essential that Russian officials learn from a history defined by an inability to form a consistent government and national identity.  A full assessment of what has improved and what remains entrenched in a troubled history will need to occur in order to find a way to overcome a struggling economy, a legacy of corruption, and power struggles revealing a government at odds with its people.
